Elephant Encounter Leaves Suspected Poacher Dead in Kruger
One suspect was arrested and a buffalo carcass was found as South African police investigate the illegal entry and death inside the park.
On Saturday, September 12, Kruger National Park rangers discovered the body of a suspected poacher near the Pafuri area, following an illegal entry on Friday, September 11.
Two suspects allegedly encountered a herd of elephants inside Kruger and fled in different directions, losing contact with one another, according to SANParks spokesperson Louw.
Rangers tracked the pair six kilometres from the Luvuvhu River, discovering the missing suspect's body and remains of a buffalo believed to have been illegally hunted.
With local community assistance, police arrested the surviving suspect, who admitted to unlawful entry into Kruger, while the South African Police Service launched investigative and forensic processes.
This incident highlights wildlife crime beyond rhino poaching, as SANParks has warned that increasing snaring incidents threaten biodiversity across Kruger's 148 mammal species.
