Habitat destroyed by Cairngorms fire to be restored with government funding
The package will restore wildfire-damaged habitats and fund seven other projects, with more than 500 firefighters having battled the blaze.
On Saturday, the Scottish Government announced £1,347,018 in funding for nature recovery projects across Scotland, with Climate Action Secretary Gillian Martin revealing the package at the 9th Summit for Subnational Governments and Cities in Armenia.
More than 500 firefighters tackled a major wildfire in the Cairngorms this summer that burned across 10 square miles of moorland and forestry, prompting the recovery funding allocation.
The package includes £150,100 specifically for Cairngorms habitat restoration and supports seven other projects delivered by Cairngorms National Park Authority and NatureScot, including native oyster and chough habitat restoration on Islay.
"Nature underpins our health, wellbeing, economy and way of life," Martin said, emphasizing that the investment helps restore damaged landscapes and strengthen environmental resilience.
NatureScot director of nature and climate change Stuart MacQuarrie stated these efforts create a "national drive to save nature," with deer management and invasive species control supporting a future where Scotland's ecosystems are healthy.
