Electrical grids aren't keeping up with the green energy push. That could risk climate goals
- Stalled spending on electrical grids worldwide is hindering the expansion of renewable energy, posing a risk to climate change efforts. The projects awaiting approval could generate five times the amount of solar and wind capacity added globally last year, potentially compromising the goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
- In order to achieve the climate goals set by governments, 80 million kilometers of power lines will need to be added or refurbished by 2040, equal to the existing global grid. However, the current rate of investment in grid infrastructure is insufficient, with annual spending needing to double to over $600 billion by 2030.
- Delays in approving and constructing important grid projects, such as the South Link transmission project in Germany and the SunZia high-voltage line in the US, further impede the advancement of renewable energy.
