Electric car sales hit record high in September

The UK government’s £650 million grant scheme helped battery electric vehicles reach a 23.3% market share, with over 72,000 new registrations in September, the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders said.

  • Last month, the United Kingdom recorded a record high in electric vehicle sales, with battery electric vehicles accounting for 23.3% of the market.
  • The UK government reintroduced the Electric Car Grant in July, and industry groups credited the September surge to the grant, wider model choice, and car manufacturers' discounts.
  • Market data show overall registrations rose 13.7% to 312,887 and BEV volumes climbed about 29% to 72,779, marking the best month on record for BEV volumes last month.
  • Businesses and fleets accounted for 71.4% of BEV registrations and 58% of the market last month, while more than 20,000 grant beneficiaries benefited from the 650m DfT scheme.
  • Amid the drive to meet ZEV targets, zero-emission vehicles account for about 22.1% this year, but private buyers must be re-energised to close the gap to the 28% mandate.
