Election Day in Michigan: How to vote and what's on the ballot
On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Michigan voters headed to the polls to decide the state's next governor, fill an open U.S. Senate seat, and determine control of key legislative chambers.
State data shows about 33% of active registered voters cast ballots early, including approximately 1.69 million absentee ballots returned statewide before Election Day.
Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican Representative John James compete to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer, while Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers battle for the U.S. Senate seat.
Voters also decided on two statewide ballot proposals: Proposal 1 asks whether to convene a constitutional convention, while Proposal 2 seeks to prohibit political contributions from regulated utilities and government contractors.
While polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, results may not be finalized until early Wednesday, November 4, as election officials begin tabulating the large volume of early and in-person ballots.
