Wife Hit ‘Blank Wall’ Asking Donaldson About Incident with Alleged Victim
Eleanor Donaldson told police she never saw any abuse as jurors heard recordings about a 2020 letter and allegations spanning 18 charges.
On Tuesday, Newry Crown Court played audio recordings of police interviews from March 2024 with former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife, Eleanor Donaldson, regarding historical sexual offences.
Jeffrey Donaldson faces 18 counts, including rape, spanning 1985 to 2008 involving two alleged victims; Eleanor Donaldson denies five counts of aiding and abetting and faces a trial of the facts.
Questioned about a 2020 letter to Complainant A, Jeffrey Donaldson told police the message expressed "regret" for "hurt, pain and distress" unrelated to sexual abuse allegations, rejecting suggestions it constituted an apology.
Eleanor Donaldson told police she was "horrified" by the claims and described her marriage as "difficult at times," recalling an incident where she found her husband alone with Complainant B.
While Eleanor Donaldson insisted she never witnessed inappropriate behaviour between her husband and Complainant B, Jeffrey Donaldson maintains that all specific allegations put to him are untrue.
