EU Warns Serbia over Funeral for ‘Butcher of Bosnia’ Ratko Mladic
Thousands attended the burial as Serbia honored the convicted war criminal with full military rites despite European Union warnings.
- On Monday, thousands of mourners gathered in Belgrade, Serbia, for the funeral of Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb commander convicted of genocide who died in prison on Aug. 27 at age 84.
- Serbian authorities facilitated the funeral by sending a government plane to retrieve Mladic's remains from the Netherlands and providing full military honors at the Church of St. Luke.
- Mladic was sentenced in 2017 for orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslims and the 1,460-day siege of Sarajevo, where more than 10,000 people were killed.
- European Union enlargement commissioner Marta Kos canceled a visit to Serbia in protest, arguing that "the glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built."
