Firefighters have been battling a large forest fire in Saxony, Germany, for the third day. About 500 firefighters were deployed on Friday night. It is burning in the Gohrischheide protected area, which lies on the border of Saxony and Brandenburg, about 60 kilometers northwest of Dresden. The fire is being complicated by the fact that a former military training area is also burning. On Thursday, meteorologists in our country also warned of smoke.
Two large forest fires keep the people in the Saxon Gohrischheide and on the Saalfelder Höhe in Thuringia in breath. Hundreds of firefighters are in use. Farmers also support the extinguishing work.
The situation is still serious: The forest fires in Thuringia and on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg are still not under control. Reinforcement is now coming from Bavaria.
