EFCC arrests airport security officer, two others over alleged gold smuggling in Kano

The EFCC said 22.2 kilogrammes of unprocessed gold worth more than N4.4 billion was concealed in an officer’s trousers for illegal export.

  • The arrests followed a directive from the EFCC Executive Chairman ordering zonal offices to intensify enforcement against mineral resource and bulk cash smuggling through international airports.
  • Baffa allegedly concealed 22.2 kilograms of gold in his trousers to bypass security checks; investigators also arrested Nasidi, who was found with 40,000 Turkish Lira and 3,000 Saudi Riyals.
  • During interrogation, Dan Zaria allegedly admitted to smuggling about 40.2 kilograms of gold between June 1 and June 11 using the same method; all three suspects remain in EFCC custody pending charges.
  • The EFCC has recently intensified scrutiny of mineral and cash smuggling through international airports, following investigations into previous cases involving undeclared foreign currencies intercepted at Kano Airport in 2025.
