Ebola Outbreak Likely Started Months Ago and Spread Undetected
WHO says the Bundibugyo strain may have spread for weeks or months before detection, with cases possibly topping 800, researchers said.
The World Health Organization warns cases of a rare Ebola strain in Congo may exceed 800, with authorities confirming 51 cases across Ituri and North Kivu provinces after the Bundibugyo virus spread undetected for weeks.
Detection was delayed by a critical four-week gap after initial tests for the common Zaire strain returned negative, allowing the rare Bundibugyo strain to circulate undetected with an average fatality rate of around 40 per cent.
Conflict and instability in Congo complicate containment, with 1.6 million people internally displaced. At Mongbwalu General Hospital, Dr. Richard Lokudu, the medical director, says facilities lack training and protection to manage a potential surge.
The United States pledged $13 million to establish 50 emergency clinics, while South Africa committed $2.5 million to support the outbreak response as international donors mobilize assistance.
Projections indicate the outbreak could reach 1,000 cases in a worst-case scenario, with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warning "it will get worse before it gets better" as officials work to identify all transmission chains.
