Nigeria: Ebola - NCDC Raises Alert After Kenya Confirms Imported Case

- The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing national Ebola preparedness after Kenya confirmed an imported case of the Bundibugyo virus. The agency announced this Tuesday that no cases have been found in Nigeria.
- According to the World Health Organisation , the patient was a Kenyan citizen living in the Democratic Republic of Congo who traveled through Uganda to Nairobi, where symptoms developed. The individual died the night of October 5 and was buried Tuesday.
- With 7,890 confirmed cases reported by the WHO as of 23 September, the ongoing outbreak in the DRC has affected 63 health zones across seven provinces. The NCDC warned the case highlights the risk of "international importation" through travel and population movement.
- To bolster readiness, the NCDC has conducted a national Ebola preparedness tabletop simulation exercise to assess the country's response capacity. Efforts focus on early detection, isolation, and laboratory diagnosis in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
- The NCDC urges health workers to maintain high suspicion when treating patients with travel history to affected areas within 21 days. The agency advises Nigerians to practice regular hand hygiene and avoid contact with bodily fluids of sick or deceased persons.
