DWP State Pension and PIP Update Ahead of New UK Prime Minister
Burnham says the pension promise will stay in place as a review warns Personal Independence Payment is no longer fit for purpose.
Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms confirmed that Personal Independence Payment claimants retain their benefits after reaching State Pension age, provided they continue meeting eligibility requirements.
Guidance from 2019 stipulates that claimants reaching State Pension age generally receive "ongoing awards" lasting up to 10 years, with review periods determined by individual circumstances and likelihood of changing needs.
Latest DWP figures show 4 million people currently claim PIP, while data indicates 680,000 individuals of State Pension age received the disability payment at the end of April.
Pensioners no longer claiming disability benefits can reclaim them if they have the same health conditions and their last claim ended less than 12 months before reaching State Pension age.
The State Pension age is gradually rising to 67 by March 2028, and receiving the full New State Pension for 2026/27 requires at least 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions.
