Dutch populist Wilders suspends campaign due to threat
- On Friday, Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom , suspended campaigning after Dutch security named him a possible target in a Belgian plot, with elections due October 29.
- Belgian authorities arrested three suspects in Antwerp accused of planning a jihadist-inspired attack using drone-mounted explosives, recovering a homemade bomb and shrapnel during raids.
- Wilders said after a briefing, `The NCTV does not foresee any 'residual threat' but I have a bad feeling and I am therefore suspending all my campaign activities for the time being.` Wilders has been under constant protection for two decades due to threats including a fatwa issued by Imam Muhammad Ashraf Asif Jalali.
- Canceling events, Wilders also declined the remote option offered by Broadcaster RTL, while Dutch Justice Minister Foort van Oosten ordered the Dutch counterterrorism office to enable Wilders to resume work soon.
- With days before October 29, police said raids are part of an attempted terrorist murder investigation, and explosive-laden drones highlight evolving threats to politicians this month's vote.
