- On Tuesday, Jan. 27 the Indiana National Guard will conclude its winter-weather response after nearly 300 soldiers and airmen were activated to assist Hoosiers during Operation Southern Snow.
- Gov. Mike Braun activated the Guard through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to help stranded motorists, establishing 24 highway assistance teams with an Evansville command-and-control team.
- Teams patrolled Interstates 65, 64 and 69 plus U.S. 41 across central and southern Indiana, conducting 192 engagements with motorists, assisting 87 vehicles and transporting 16 stranded drivers.
- Maj. Gen. Larry Muennich praised Indiana National Guard members, saying `These Guardsmen are your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers and your family members who have volunteered to serve in times of need`; no serious injuries were reported.
- More than 5,400 National Guard members were activated across 14 states and Washington, D.C., with at least 35 deaths reported and National Weather Service warnings for extreme cold.
