Disabled oil tanker received dozens of warnings before US opened fire, AP source says
U.S. forces fired precision munitions into the tanker’s engine room after dozens of warnings, and India said three sailors were killed.
On Wednesday, the American military disabled the Palau-flagged Settebello after it attempted to breach the United States blockade of Iran in the Gulf of Oman.
The ship had dismissed nearly 60 verbal warnings and eight shows of force over two weeks, with a United States official characterizing the tanker as a 'shadow fleet' vessel evading sanctions.
Central Command gave the crew 15 minutes to vacate the engine room before American aircraft fired 'precision munitions' to disable the vessel, according to military statements.
Three Indian sailors died during the incident in the Gulf of Oman, prompting New Delhi to lodge a 'strong protest' with the United States over the strike.
On Friday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told his Indian counterpart that commercial vessels must comply with United States forces in the Strait, emphasizing the blockade has been enforced for more than 60 days.
