Flyers Now Barred From Using Power Banks on Flights for Charging—Check DGCA Guidelines Here
DGCA mandates power banks under 100 Wh be carried in hand baggage only and bans their use with seat power sockets to prevent hard-to-extinguish lithium battery fires.
- The DGCA announced in its latest advisory that passengers must carry power banks and spare lithium batteries in hand baggage, not in checked luggage or overhead compartments.
- Because lithium batteries can ignite and be self-sustaining, the DGCA advisory warns fires are intense, can explode personal electronic devices, and placement in overhead stowage bins delays detection and response.
- Earlier this year, a power bank caused a mid-air fire at 10 kilometers on a Hangzhou–Seoul flight, and last year a power bank caught fire on a Dimapur-bound IndiGo plane but was extinguished by cabin crew with no injuries.
- Passengers must now report unusual device heat or smoke to cabin crew, and airlines must report lithium battery-related safety issues to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation , updating safety assessments and crew training.
- The DGCA capped permitted power bank capacity at less than 100 watt-hours, meaning devices not greater than 27,000mAh, and banned connecting power banks to aircraft seat power sockets.
