Deputy FM Jenny Gilruth Says Scotland Will Need Cuts to Find £5bn Savings
Gilruth said efficiencies and shared services will help close the gap, but thousands of public sector jobs may still go.
On Sunday, Deputy First Minister Jenny Gilruth confirmed the Scottish government will "undoubtedly" need to make cuts, appointing Public Service Reform Secretary Ivan McKee to lead efficiency efforts tackling the financial gap.
Scotland needs to save around £2.6bn on day-to-day revenue and £2.1bn on capital projects by decade's end, with estimates predicting at least 11,000 to 12,000 public sector positions will be axed.
Gilruth suggested most reductions will occur through "natural attrition," while emphasizing "driving some of the efficiency" by sharing services across public bodies and utilizing digital opportunities.
Scottish Labour finance spokesperson Michael Marra accused the SNP of "wreaking havoc" with public finances, arguing the government is keeping Scots "in the dark" about where cuts will fall.
Despite financial strain, the SNP Government remains committed to whole-family wellbeing strategies for child poverty, having used most of a three-year pay policy budget in two years to avert strikes.
