- On Friday, October 31, 2025, a Lee County sheriff's deputy shot and killed J.A., a 13-year-old boy wanted in his grandmother Connie Linen's killing, and J.A. died at the scene.
- Hoke County deputies went to Pearce Place for a well-being check and found Connie Linen, 68, unresponsive and later pronounced dead, while detectives identified her grandson, J.A., as a suspect and filed secured-custody paperwork charging him with first-degree murder.
- During a foot pursuit the teenager grabbed a two-by-four from a yard and charged toward an officer, prompting the Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy to shoot him.
- This has been a tragic and emotional situation, Hoke County Sheriff Roderick Virgil said, while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will review Thursday's shooting as standard protocol.
