As a libertarian and conservative, I understand that compulsory national service could seem like an infringement on personal freedom. But I still think it is worth exploring under specific guidelines.

From 2026, Denmark also introduces compulsory military service for women. In Austria, women have been able to register for voluntary basic military service for two years. Helena Choutka and Saskia Zöhrer are taking their basic training at the supply regiment 1 in Gratkorn.

Men are required to serve if they are called on under a lottery system devised to compensate for a potential lack of volunteers.

Both countries want to spend significantly more money on defence. Denmark also extends military service and is calling women earlier than planned.
