Denmark Backs Ukraine's EU Membership Quest as Zelenskyy Meets Key European Backers
DENMARK, JUL 3 – Denmark pledges to back Ukraine's EU accession by pushing for stronger sanctions on Russia, expanding military aid, and challenging Hungary's veto, amid stalled US weapons deliveries.
On July 1, Denmark assumed its EU Council presidency, pledged full support for Ukraine’s EU bid, and vowed to exert maximum pressure on Hungary to lift objections.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly blocked EU accession talks with Ukraine, preventing negotiations despite the Council praising Ukraine's reforms and endorsing support.
Danish Minister Marie Bjerre pledged to explore all mechanisms, including Article 7, to pressure Hungary and support Ukraine with increased military aid, sanctions, and defense cooperation.
Following the US halt, von der Leyen announced the EU will deliver 2 million shells by year-end to support Ukraine amid gaps in military aid.
During its six-month EU presidency, Denmark aims to mediate efforts to support Ukraine, including starting Ukrainian weapons production in Denmark this fall, to bolster European security.
