Democrat Pia Dandiya wins election to U.S. House in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District
Dandiya, a former teacher and principal, won a newly redrawn open seat that Democrats had targeted for years.
On Tuesday, Democrat Pia Dandiya won Florida's newly redrawn 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar with 51.9% of the vote. Major media outlets projected her victory in the competitive open-seat race.
Florida's Republican-dominated legislature redrew the congressional map earlier this year, creating District 22 as an open-seat contest without an incumbent. The redistricting transformed the newly drawn region into a competitive battleground for Democrats.
Dandiya, a former high school principal and White House Fellow, campaigned on education and affordability. Askar, a Naples-based businessman and Marine Corps veteran, emphasized conservative policies and support for Donald Trump's agenda.
With her victory, Dandiya becomes the first Indian American to represent Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives and the 10th Indian American elected to Congress in national history. The win adds a new South Asian voice to the chamber.
The newly elected congresswoman will serve a two-year term when the next Congress convenes in January. Dandiya plans to prioritize lowering the cost of living, expanding public education, and advancing government accountability.
