Democrat Pia Dandiya wins election to U.S. House in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District
- On Tuesday, Democrat Pia Dandiya won the race for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar in one of South Florida's most closely watched contests, CBS News projected.
- Florida's Republican-controlled legislature redrew the district earlier this year, creating an open-seat contest that shifted west and south from its former coastal Palm Beach County configuration.
- Dandiya, a former educator and high school principal, secured 56.5 percent of the vote, defeating Askar, a businessman and Marine Corps veteran who campaigned on conservative economic policies.
- This victory makes the 36-year-old the first Indian American elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida and the 10th Indian American elected to Congress in national history.
- Dandiya will serve a two-year term when the new Congress convenes in January, representing a district that President Donald Trump carried by approximately 10 percentage points in 2024.
