Heavy Rain Batters Delhi-NCR; IMD Issues Orange Alert As Waterlogging, Traffic Snarls Hit Region
Skymet warned of 180 mm to 250 mm of rain in 24 hours as flooded roads, a highway collapse and traffic jams paralyzed the NCR.
- On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the India Meteorological Department issued an emergency Red Nowcast Alert for Delhi-NCR as heavy rains paralyzed traffic and submerged roads following 36 hours of intermittent rainfall.
- Weather experts attributed the persistent rain to the seasonal monsoon trough shifting northwards from central India toward the Himalayan foothills, intensifying the downpours.
- Following 115 mm of rainfall, a crucial section of the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway caved in near Narsinghpur, causing traffic jams stretching over 10 kilometres that forced police to divert vehicles to the Dwarka Expressway.
- To reduce congestion, Gurugram and Noida authorities urged private firms to implement work-from-home measures, while major intersections in Ghaziabad turned into virtual lakes with water rising up to two feet.
- Forecasting agency Skymet warned that Ghaziabad, Noida, East Delhi, Baghpat, and Meerut could receive up to 250 mm of rainfall over the next 24 hours, as the IMD cautioned that additional thunderstorms may increase flash flood risks.
