Delhi Govt Mandates 50% WFH From 18 December for All Offices to Combat Rising Air Pollution
Delhi mandates 50% remote work under GRAP Stage III and provides Rs 10,000 aid to registered construction workers affected by pollution control restrictions, officials said.
- On Wednesday , Delhi Labour Minister Kapil Mishra ordered 50% staff work from home from Thursday and announced Rs 10,000 compensation for construction workers unemployed under GRAP III and IV.
- Amid sharply worsening winter air quality, officials said unfavourable weather and low winds triggered GRAP thresholds, with many monitors showing 'severe' and 'severe plus' AQI levels.
- Under GRAP rules, Stage III bans non-essential construction and stone crushers, Stage IV halts all construction, and compensation applies only to registered construction workers excluding essential services.
- The Labour Department issued an advisory directing employers in Delhi to follow the remote-work mandate, warning non-compliance is punishable under Sections 15 and 16 of the Environment Act, 1986, as Stage IV is in force.
- Historically, winter weather drives air-quality declines in Delhi, and officials noted air quality typically deteriorates sharply in winter, often ranking Delhi among the world's most polluted capitals.
