Deaths in prison increase by 30% compared to previous 12 months

31 July 2025 The latest official Safety in Custody statistics highlight a deeply concerning 30% increase of deaths in prison compared to the previous 12 months as well as the highest rate of self-harm since records began in 2004.   In the 12 months to June 2025, 401 people died in prison, compared to 308 in the previous 12 months.
