DENR Chief Orders Long-Term Waste Solutions for Cebu
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources halted landfill operations after six deaths and dozens missing due to a garbage landslide linked to heavy rainfall and engineering issues.
- On Thursday, January 8, the Binaliw landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City collapsed, destroying a materials recovery facility, and fatalities rose to six after two more bodies were retrieved yesterday morning.
- Investigators point to oversaturation from periodic rainfall, probable geotechnical lapses, and landfill location as possible causes, while the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas ordered a cease-and-desist.
- Search-and-Rescue teams raced the clock, composed of firefighters, police officers, military personnel and city disaster risk reduction personnel, while a 50-ton crane lifted twisted tin roofs and iron beams from the materials recovery facility.
- Data from the Bureau of Fire Protection showed 31 missing and 12 hospitalized, while city officials said 28 remained missing and 18 were hospitalized as of January 12, and facility operations are suspended with alternative dumping sites identified, including in Consolacion town.
- On Monday, January 12, rescue operations continued after detectors picked up signs of life, with Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirming searches extended beyond January 11.
