Ardrossan harbour to be taken into public ownership
The Scottish Government’s ferry assets company will redevelop Ardrossan Harbour to serve new ferries and ensure resilient Arran ferry operations after 18 months without service.
- On Tuesday, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop told MSPs negotiations have concluded and Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd will sign the Ardrossan Harbour purchase this month.
- Because the new ferries exceed berth capacity, the MV Glen Sannox at 102.4m cannot safely berth at Ardrossan's main Arran Berth of 97m, requiring at least 80m redevelopment.
- After due diligence, the Scottish Government completed legal, commercial and financial reviews, allocated 2025-26 budget funding, issued a shareholder directive to CMAL, and Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said, `We rescued Ferguson Marine for a purpose and we are determined to see it succeed.`
- Hyslop will meet the Ardrossan Taskforce this evening to discuss immediate steps, with campaigners demanding rapid tendering so work can start without delay.
- Looking ahead, Scottish Government 2025-26 budget funding means substantial rebuilds at Ardrossan, with major works estimated at at least 80m, affecting wider procurement plans.
