Bangladesh’s Islamist party projects force with a big rally in Dhaka
DHAKA DISTRICT, DHAKA DIVISION, JUL 19 – Jamaat-e-Islami mobilized over half a million supporters demanding electoral reforms and proportional representation ahead of next year's national elections.
- Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh's largest Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami rallied in the capital Dhaka to show their strength ahead of elections expected next year.
- Jamaat-E-Islami, which had sided with Pakistan during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence, placed a seven-point demand to the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to ensure a free and fair election.
- The party is expected to contest 300 parliamentary seats and is attempting to forge alliances with other Islamist groups in hopes of becoming a third force in the country.
