ATLANTIC OCEAN, AUG 8 – The National Hurricane Center raised the development chance for a tropical wave to 40%, tracking west-northwest across the Atlantic with potential impacts in the northeastern Caribbean next week.
- The National Hurricane Center on Saturday said a tropical wave is being monitored for potential development over the next seven days.
- Amid favorable environmental conditions, the new system offshore Africa generated disorganized showers and could become a tropical depression by mid to late next week, NOAA said.
- The NHC said there is a possibility of formation as soon as next Friday, with a 50% chance over seven days, as the wave moves west-northwest at 15–20 mph.
- Forecasters said the system will turn away from the U.S. before posing a direct threat, with heavy rain expected in the Cape Verde Islands Sunday and Monday.
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts 13–18 named storms with peak activity from mid-August into October, as the season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
