Since the introduction of a surtax on spirits, Cognac's houses have been struggling. As many as 97% of sales are exported, of which a large majority are to China and the United States, two of the countries having introduced this tax in the midst of trade war. On a visit to Cognac, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Laurent Saint-Martin, has suggested an exit from the crisis through the negotiations.
In 2024, cognac exports to China fell by almost a quarter in value compared to the previous year, as a result of anti-dumping measures imposed by Beijing. However, with the resumption of negotiations, the horizon seems to be brightening for the profession.
