The Trump administration is imposing 50 percent tariffs on a series of imports from neighboring Canada. It is a major escalation of the trade conflict, in which both countries point the finger at each other as the culprit.
The negotiations on a trade agreement between the US and Canada have failed. Washington subsequently imposed punitive duties - for the first time also on goods covered by the free trade agreement.
It is an escalation of tensions between the two long-standing allies. The political consequences will therefore likely be even greater than the economic ones.
Trump previously said they were working on a mutually beneficial agreement.
