More than 100 volunteers lay flags at soldiers’ graves in Kingston
Volunteers placed Canadian flags on graves of 800 soldiers at Cataraqui Cemetery to honor military service ahead of Remembrance Day, organizers said.
- On Thursday, more than 100 volunteers arrived at Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston to place Canadian flags on soldiers' graves ahead of Remembrance Day, receiving lists and maps to find graves on the civilian side.
- Organized as an annual tradition, the Remembrance Veterans Committee, chaired by Dave Donovan since 1999, invites community volunteers to locate military graves.
- A thick carpet of fallen leaves and overgrown grass complicated finding flat-lying tombstones as volunteers checked every tombstone and military emblem among around 1,500 soldiers buried at Cataraqui Cemetery.
- Turnout drew uniformed Royal Canadian Air Force participants, organisers said, including ten members, with four or five volunteers turned away and more than 100 students scheduled to visit on Monday.
- The cemetery holds notable graves such as Leonard J. Birchall, while volunteers like Robert Gibson joined to honor family service ties, Gibson said.
