No Criminal Charges for Montreal Protesters Arrested at Bank Sit-In
The case ends after 44 protesters were arrested in April 2024, and most had already settled through community service or bylaw fines.
The Crown withdrew criminal mischief charges against 14 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested during a sit-in at a Montreal Scotiabank branch.
The protesters agreed to plead guilty to violating a municipal noise bylaw and pay $300 fines.
They were among 44 people arrested in April 2024 while demanding that Scotiabank divest from Elbit Systems.
Defence lawyer Barbara Bedont said the remaining defendants had a strong constitutional case, while the protesters filed a complaint alleging judicial bias.
The Crown has withdrawn all criminal charges brought against pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrested during a seated demonstration organized at a bank in downtown Montreal over two years ago.
