Louvre vows to restore the imperial crown dropped by thieves during museum robbery

The diamond and emerald-studded crown, recovered damaged after October 19 theft, will be restored with patron funding amid Louvre's €800 million modernization plan, officials said.

  • On Friday, Laurence des Cars said the crown recovered after the Oct. 19 robbery will be restored as a symbol of `renaissance`, with supporting patrons funding and a scientific committee supervising.
  • Thieves forced entry into the Apollo Gallery through a window using a freight lift and disc cutters, and the crown was likely damaged by a small cut during removal, the 2018-2024 report said.
  • Only Empress Eugénie's imperial crown, with more than 1,300 diamonds, was recovered on the day of the robbery, but a few diamond pieces and one of the eight gold eagles are missing.
  • Des Cars offered her resignation on the day of the robbery, but the culture minister refused, and France's court of auditors urged the Louvre to accelerate security modernization.
  • The decade-long Louvre New Renaissance plan launched earlier this year includes security upgrades and broader renovations, addressing crowding as the pyramid designed for four million visitors now hosts nine million, with modernization costing up to 800 million euros.
