Crown delivers closing submissions in Saanich double-murder trial
Prosecutors say DNA, CCTV and witness evidence link Christopher Cathcart to the killings of William Bradshaw and Stephanie Jade Elk.
- On Monday, Crown prosecutors Lorne Phipps and Sheila Simpson delivered closing submissions to Justice Jennifer Power in the double-murder trial of Christopher Cathcart, accused of killing William Billy Bradshaw and Stephanie Jade Elk in 2022.
- Messages exchanged on the morning of Oct. 19, 2022, indicated significant relationship conflict between Cathcart and Elk, prompting Phipps to highlight that these hardships pushed the accused toward suicidal ideation before the killings.
- Forensic experts testified that blood and DNA from the accused and victims were found on a knife recovered at 3434 Bethune Ave., while CCTV footage placed Cathcart near Bradshaw between Blanshard Street and Saanich Road at the time of death.
- University student Sarah Paul testified she heard screaming and saw a man in black inside her home, where Elk was discovered with 21 stab wounds, corroborating neighbour accounts of a male pursuer.
- Representing himself throughout the trial, Cathcart has pleaded not guilty to both charges, with his closing submissions set to follow the Crown's final arguments delivered yesterday.
