Critical incident at NHS trust ends but patients still face 'long waits'
The trust said more than 200 patients were safe to leave as emergency departments faced unprecedented demand and long corridor waits.
On Tuesday, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust declared a critical incident following record-breaking attendance at its Emergency Departments, with staff struggling to manage dangerously high patient volumes.
Unprecedented demand, including 2,000 more attendances in September 2026 compared to last year, has overwhelmed services, while high numbers of cardiology patients requiring intensive care further strained hospital resources.
The trust reported more than 100 patients currently waiting to be seen in Emergency Departments, while more than 200 others remain in beds despite being medically fit for discharge, filling nearly eight wards.
Chief Nurse Tracy Pilcher apologized for "significant waits and care provided in corridors," noting that staff safely discharged more than 247 patients on Tuesday to mitigate extreme pressure.
Officials expect to remain in critical incident overnight and will provide an update on Wednesday, urging the public to use alternative services like Pharmacy First or NHS services for non-life-threatening conditions.
