For many, going to the beach at Lake Balaton is expensive, but most holidaymakers say that Budapest or the Adriatic are not cheaper either, and they are emotionally attached to this place. Bars are struggling to survive, they can no longer cut costs, taxes and fees are rising brutally, in addition to soaring raw material prices. Foreigners are increasingly vocal in warning that Croatian prices "do not match their own level of service" and that the Adriatic is turning into a destination for the wealthy elite. Locals, however, remind us that the time of "war discounts" is long gone.
