Former Brookside Actor Jailed in Sheffield After Duping Would-Be Models
More than 6,000 victims were duped into paying upfront fees for fake modelling work, according to National Trading Standards.
Former Brookside actor Philip Foster was jailed for nine years on Friday at Sheffield Crown Court after being extradited from Spain, where he fled before his trial for a £13.6m modelling fraud.
A six-year National Trading Standards investigation found Foster's network exploited more than 6,000 victims by promising paid modelling work while extorting money for worthless photography portfolios.
Judge David Dixon told Foster, "You were a coward, you decided to hide and didn't come and face the music," while noting he purchased designer watches and a Porsche, funding a lavish lifestyle from the scheme.
Defending barrister Anthony Barraclough cited Foster's wife's death from cancer and his son Michael's murder last year, though he acknowledged Foster remained an "absconder" who evaded justice.
Eight other defendants received sentences earlier this year for their roles in the operation, which left many victims in serious debt after they took out payday loans to pay the fraudulent fees.
