Container ship arrives in UK after landmark voyage from China via the Arctic
Sea Legend’s first weekly Arctic service uses the route to cut Asia-Europe transit times and fuel use, analysts said.
The Liberian-registered Dubai Tower arrived at the QEII berth in Teesport, Northeast England, yesterday after departing Ningbo on August 15, completing the first of eight weekly summer voyages on Sea Legend's China Arctic Express Service via the Northern Sea Route.
Arctic transit roughly halves voyage time between Asia and Europe compared to the Cape of Good Hope route, which takes around 40 to 50 days, though operations are limited to the summer season when ice melts.
Beyond Sea Legend, carriers including New New Shipping, OVP Shipping, and South Korean newcomer PanStar are offering Asia-Europe Arctic services; analyst Alphaliner reports the 2,758 teu PanStar Arco carries 737 teu of containers on its trial voyage currently heading south off Norway.
Teesport was not originally listed as a port of call by Sea Legend, and the QEII berth is designed for bulk and project cargoes rather than containers, indicating operational adaptation for Arctic container arrivals.
The 2025 Arctic season recorded 103 transit voyages by 88 vessels including 15 container operations, establishing a baseline as Sea Legend commits to eight weekly summer sailings during the ice-free window.
