Conservatives Promising to Build a Women and Children's Hospital in Surrey if Elected
Lorne Doerkson says the project would keep Surrey families from traveling an hour or more to Vancouver for care.
On Thursday, Conservative Party of BC leader Lorne Doerkson announced that a Conservative government would build a Women's and Children's Hospital in Surrey if elected on October 24.
Previously, former Mayor Doug McCallum's Safe Surrey Coalition and his Surrey Connect slate pledged to dedicate city-owned Newton land for a health facility, aiming to address long commutes to Vancouver for pediatric care.
Data shows Surrey families travel over an hour for pediatric care; Vancouver maintains six hospitals for 730,000 people, while no pediatric intensive care exists anywhere in Fraser Health.
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke joined the campaign on Thursday, calling on provincial parties to commit to five local priorities including the hospital, while NDP leader David Eby also pledged support for the project.
With Surrey poised to become British Columbia's largest city, candidates face mounting pressure to address these infrastructure demands before the October 24 provincial election.
