NDP Vow to Create 75 Involuntary Care Spaces at Okanagan Correctional Facility
The plan would add 75 beds for people with severe mental health and addiction challenges and complex brain injuries if the party forms government.
On Oct 16, the NDP pledged up to $90 million to open 75 involuntary care spaces at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver if the party forms government in the upcoming provincial election.
The initiative aims to assist individuals experiencing severe mental health and addiction challenges who cannot make decisions for themselves, as part of a province-wide plan to expand involuntary compassionate care.
Kelowna City Councillor Loyal Wooldridge praised regional mayors, First Nations, and Tom Dyas for preparing the Oliver-based site, stating "we've chosen this site because there's space available and we can bring it online most quickly."
Kelowna-Mission Conservative candidates Kristina Loewen and Gavin Dew welcomed the commitment but criticized the timing, with Loewen stating it 'should've happened years ago' and was not David Eby's idea.
Opening in early 2028, the facility will join a provincial network including 35 Foundry centres and existing involuntary care facilities in Surrey and Maple Ridge, expanding the province's compassionate care capacity.
