Eby Vows to Cut $45 Charge for Low-Income Seniors Bus Pass, Bring in Surrey Charter
Eby said a re-elected NDP government would drop the $45 bus-pass fee for low-income seniors and fund a $250 million rapid transit link.
On Thursday, British Columbia NDP leader David Eby visited Surrey, announcing a Surrey Charter, free bus passes for low-income seniors, and $250 million for Bus Rapid Transit to White Rock.
Eby stated Surrey "will be the largest city in British Columbia," noting the charter reflects the city's evolution as a hub for national economic activity.
Under the proposed Surrey Charter, City Council would gain authority to "pass bylaws to regulate such things as noise and land use," mirroring the 1953 Vancouver Charter.
A re-elected NDP government would eliminate the $45 bus pass charge for low-income seniors and commit $250 million to Bus Rapid Transit, building on previous fuel tax suspension promises.
Surrey remains a key political battleground between NDP and Conservative support as the B.C. election nears, with leaders frequently visiting the city to sway voters.
