Ukraine Makes Fastest Battlefield Gain in 2.5 Years
Ukraine made the fastest territorial gain in over two years after Starlink disruption degraded Russian battlefield communications, recapturing 201 square kilometers, the Institute for the Study of War said.
- Between Wednesday and Sunday last week, the Ukrainian armed forces recaptured 201 square kilometres from Russia, the largest short-term gain since June 2023, AFP analysis shows.
- On February 5, military observers noted disruption of Starlink antennas after Elon Musk announced "measures" to curb Kremlin use, and Kyiv said Russian forces’ terminals were deactivated.
- Around 80 kilometres east of Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv gained ground on all days except February 9, when Russian forces advanced without Starlink support.
- Despite Kyiv's gains, the ISW said Ukrainian counterattacks likely leveraged a block on Russian access to Starlink, causing communications issues while Moscow controlled 19.5 percent of Ukrainian territory in mid-February.
- Historically, Starlink has been present since February 9, 2023, and roughly 7 percent of Ukraine—Crimea and part of the Donbas—was under Russian control before the 2022 invasion.
