Video Shows Rescue of Lone Survivor From Deadly B.C. Helicopter Crash
RCAF crews hoisted one survivor from steep terrain after the crash of a Hughes 500 helicopter on forestry work, while two people died.
- On Tuesday, July 16, the Royal Canadian Air Force's 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron evacuated one survivor from a helicopter crash in the Bute Inlet area, operating under the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
- A Hughes 500 helicopter operated by Campbell River-based West Coast Helicopters crashed at 6:15 a.m. during forestry operations, carrying a pilot and two workers from CFMG.
- Pilot Riley Browne and one CFMG crew member did not survive the crash. West Coast Helicopters described Browne, a Port McNeill native who joined the company in 2021, as a pillar of the organization.
- Search and Rescue Technicians hoisted into steep mountainous terrain to reach the survivor, then transported the individual to 19 Wing Comox for transfer to B.C. Emergency Health Services.
- Black Press has reached out to CFMG for comment as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
