Washington Commanders Tap Dallas Firm to Design New NFL Stadium
The $3.7 billion redevelopment includes a covered 65,000-seat stadium and a mixed-use campus with housing, parks, and retail to revitalize 180 acres along the Anacostia River.
- The Washington Commanders selected HKS, a Dallas-based global architecture and design firm, as lead architect Thursday for a new stadium at the RFK Stadium site opening in 2030.
- Under an agreement approved by the D.C. Council, the Washington Commanders will contribute $2.7 billion while the District of Columbia government provides about $1.1 billion in public support under the April agreement.
- The design calls for about 65,000 seats in a roofed, year-round venue, and HKS will host community meetings in November and December while RFK demolition continues and vertical construction starts in spring 2027.
- The redevelopment will convert 180 acres along the Anacostia River into a mixed-use destination with 5,000 to 6,000 new homes including 1,500 to 1,900 affordable homes and 30% green space.
- HKS, known for SoFi, AT&T, U.S. Bank and Lucas Oil stadiums, won over HNTB amid political naming controversy after President Donald Trump recently suggested naming the stadium after him, with the White House calling the idea `beautiful`.
