Colorado’s U.S. senators derail government funding votes over dismantling of NCAR by Trump
Senators blocked a government funding bill to oppose the Trump administration's plan to close NCAR, which employs over 800 scientists and leads in weather and climate research.
- On Thursday night, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet blocked the five-bill 'minibus' appropriations package, forcing the U.S. Senate to adjourn for the year and pushing the funding debate into January.
- Earlier this week, Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget , revealed plans to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research , calling it `one of the largest sources of climate alarmism in the country`.
- With more than 800 employees, National Center for Atmospheric Research is defended as the premier weather, climate and natural-hazard institute, and Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet demand full funding to keep NCAR open.
- Senate Republican leaders warned the hold complicates quick passage because John Thune, Senate Republican , may need floor time and lacks 60 votes to advance the bill.
- Bennet and Hickenlooper said the hold was retaliation and vowed to `pull every lever available` to defend Colorado after cuts including scrapping $109 million in environmental transportation grants and $615 million in Department of Energy grant funding.
