Colombian waste pickers inundate iconic Bogota square with plastic bottles to protest falling wages
- Dozens of Colombian waste pickers filled Bogotá's Bolivar Square with about 15 tons of recyclable goods as a protest against decreasing wages and tougher working conditions for scavengers.
- The demonstration was organized by 14 waste picker associations in Bogotá, where about 20,000 scavengers work long hours collecting recyclables.
- Nohra Padilla, president of Colombia’s National Association of Waste Pickers, stated, 'We want factories to pay us a fair price for the materials we collect.'
- Jorge Ospina noted that recycling plants reduced payment for each kilogram of plastic from about 75 U.S. cents to 50 cents over two months.
