Colombian police capture suspected leader in senator's shooting
- Colombian authorities have apprehended Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, believed to be the key planner behind the June 7 attack on Miguel Uribe Turbay, a senator and hopeful contender for the presidency, in Bogota.
- The attack occurred during Uribe's political speech at a park and involved a 15-year-old shooter allegedly hired by Arteaga, who has a long criminal history, police said.
- Uribe, a 39-year-old conservative senator and vocal critic of President Gustavo Petro, remains in intensive care after being shot twice in the head and once in the leg.
- Police have detained four additional suspects involved in the attack, and Colombia's police chief Carlos Fernando Triana reported that Arteaga faces charges including aggravated attempted homicide and exploiting minors in criminal activities.
- The arrests mark progress in a widely condemned case that recalls Colombia’s history of political violence and drug cartel-related attacks on politicians.
