- On Sunday a man allegedly hacked his estranged wife to death at a women's hostel in Raju Naidu Layout, Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, police said.
- The couple had been living separately because police said Balamurugan suspected Sreepriya of a relationship with a relative of Balamurugan and he confronted her to return to Tirunelveli district.
- When she refused, an argument broke out on the portico of the women's hostel, and Balamurugan pulled out a concealed machete, hacking Sreepriya multiple times and killing her on the spot.
- Rathinapuri Police reached the scene soon after being alerted, took Balamurugan into custody, and the victim's body was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital; the couple has three children.
- The man then took a selfie and posted it as his WhatsApp status with the caption `The price of betrayal is death`, a detail reports say has amplified social-media reaction.
