Coalition to scrap Albo’s housing fund, cap migration on new homes
The opposition says the cap will rise only as new homes are completed, while a $5 billion infrastructure fund and code cuts aim to boost supply.
On Thursday, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor will deliver his budget reply, pledging to cap net overseas migration at annual housing completions while abolishing Labor's flagship housing programs including the Housing Australia Future Fund.
Taylor argues that under Labor, "migration has run miles ahead of housing," putting pressure on rents and house prices while Australians face an "inability to build enough homes at a fast enough pace."
The Coalition plans a $5 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund to "unlock up to 400,000 homes" and slash the National Construction Code, reducing new home building costs by up to $70,000 per dwelling.
Repealing the government's controversial changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing is central to the Opposition's response, with Shadow Finance Minister Claire Chandler arguing younger investors face disadvantage.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defends his "ambitious target" of 1.2 million new homes by mid-2029, though the Coalition's migration-cap strategy positions it to challenge Pauline Hanson's One Nation on immigration policy.
